1. Protection Duration and Renewal Options
The maximum protection duration for a registered design in Belize is 15 years. Protection begins with the filing date of the design with the relevant office and is initially granted for 5 years. The design protection can then be extended twice by 5 years each, allowing for a total protection period of up to 15 years. This extension is carried out through a formal application and the payment of renewal fees.
2. Renewal of Design Protection
To renew the protection of your design, the renewal application must be submitted within the ongoing protection period, preferably in the last months before the protection expires. The payment of renewal fees must also be made within this period to ensure continuous protection.
3. Renewal After the Protection Period
If the renewal application or payment of the renewal fee is not made on time, there is an option to apply for renewal within a grace period of up to 6 months after the protection period ends. However, an additional surcharge will apply for the late renewal. If the grace period is not adhered to, the design protection will end, and renewal will no longer be possible.
4. Restoration of the Design After Expiry
If the design protection has expired, there is the possibility to apply for restoration of the design or for re-registration. These applications must be submitted within 12 months after the expiry of the protection period, and additional fees will apply.
5. Required Information for Renewal
For the renewal of your design, we will need the registration number of the design as well as the filing date. This information is necessary to ensure that the application is submitted correctly and on time.
6. Costs and Additional Fees
The prices for the renewal of a registered design in Belize are per design and per protection period. These prices include the usual official fees as well as our consultation fees. Any surcharge fees for late renewal are not included in the standard price and must be paid separately.
