1. Maximum Protection Duration and Extension Options

In Pakistan, the maximum protection duration for registered designs is 30 years, provided the necessary extensions are applied for in time.

  • The protection starts from the filing date at the relevant office.
  • After the initial protection period of 10 years, the protection can be extended twice for additional periods of 10 years each.
  • Timely applications and payments are required to reach the maximum protection duration.

2. How the Extension Process Works

The extension process involves:

  • Filing an extension application with the relevant office,
  • Timely payment of extension fees.

The application must be submitted within the 12 months prior to the expiration of the current protection period. Submitting early avoids risks and additional costs.

3. Grace Period and Late Payment Fees

If the extension is not completed within the regular period, the application can still be submitted within a grace period of 6 months after the protection period ends. However, a late payment fee will apply. If the grace period is not observed, the design protection will lapse permanently.
